Question Mark and Exclamation Mark
Question Mark:
1) The Question Mark (?) is used at the end of the Interrogative sentence. The sentence may start with a "Wh" question or "Yes or No Questions".
Examples:
What is your name?
How old are you?
Where is your mother?
Is it your phone?
Which is your favourite book?
2) The Question Mark is used at the end of the Question Tag.
Examples:
It is nice, isn't it?
She is a good teacher, isn't she?
He was born in America, wasn't he?
You are coming with me, aren't you?
She looks great, doesn't she?
3) The Question Mark is used at the end of the direct question.
Examples:
What colour do you like?
Which is your favourite book?
How old are you?
Who is your favourite teacher?
What is the name of the dog?
How to use the Question Mark in the Quoted line?
1) If the Question Mark is inside the quotation, then it should be considered as the Quoted person ask the question
Examples:
Sheela asked, "Where are you going?"
Rama asked, "What is your name?"
Laxmana asked, "Which is your favourite destination?"
Lava asked, "Did you buy the books?"
2) If the Question Mark is outside the quotation, it should be the Quoted person who does not ask.
Examples:
Which poem contains the line "I heard the sound"?
Is it the servent say "I will come by 1:30 P.M"?
Where we should not use the Question Mark?
Don't use the Question Mark at the end of the reported speech
Examples:
Direct Speech: She asked me, "How many times have you seen that film?"
Indirect Speech: He asked me how many times I had seen that movie
Direct speech: Rani asked me, "Who is coming for Lunch?"
Indirect Speech: Rani asked me who was coming for dinner
Exclamation Mark:
1) The Exclamation Mark should be used at the end of the strong feeling sentence
Examples:
Ah! There you are!
Ahh! It's eating my hand!
2) The Exclamation Mark should be used for giving the command to others
Examples:
Stop!
Get up!
Don't touch the table!
3) The Exclamation Mark should be used in the Interjection sentence. After Interjection words, we have to use Exclamatory words. The Interjection words don't give you meaning but it shows the feeling of the person. The words are,
Aah!
Ah!
Aww!
Ahem!
Bingo!
Bravo!
Eww!
Hey!
Oops!
Hah!
Hi!
Whoa!
Examples:
Hey! stop looking at me!
Hey! you!
Ouch! it hurts!
4) The Exclamation Mark should be used in the surprise moment.
Examples:
Wow! What a beautiful flower!
Wow! Looking great!
What a fine day!
5) If we suddenly raise the volume, then we have to use the Exclamation mark.
Examples:
Food!
Taxi!
Stop the bus!
How to use the Exclamation Mark in the Quoted Line?
1) If the Exclamation Mark is inside the quotation, then it should be considered as the Quoted person ask the question
Examples:
"My friend coming to visit me after 3 years!", she said.
Raju said, "I'm so excited!"
Ranju said, "What a lovely day it was!"
2) If the Exclamation Mark is outside the quotation, it should be the Quoted person who does not ask.
Examples:
My teacher said I am doing a "great job"!
My parents said nowadays I am studying "very good"!
