What is the simple present tense?
The simple present tense is spoken about regular and at present action.
Structure:
verb - the basic form of the verb (or) verb+s
- If the subject is singular then we have to add "s" the basic form of the verb
- If the subject is plural then the basic form of the verb remains constant. There is no change in the basic form of the verb.
Rules:
1. Habitual action :
The action describes the day to day activities and regular actions.
Examples: she drinks tea in the evening
She goes to school regularly
She likes ice cream
2. Proverbs
For proverbs, we should use simple present tense
Examples: slow and steady wins the race
A new broom sweeps clean
Action speaks louder than words
3. Scientific/ universal truth :
The scientific or universal truth is always unchangeable. So here we should use simple present tense
Example: Water boils at 180 degree Celsius
Water freezes at 0 degree Celsius
Pluto is not a planet
4. Future action planned in advance:
If the upcoming actions are well planned then we have to use the simple present tense.
Howard bus arrives at 9'clock
Examples :
The minister arrives at 6'clock.
The bus comes at 12.30
The function begins at 10 5. Running commentary:
In every sports meet, the running commentary session going on. There they are using simple present tense in the sentences.
Examples :
The team wins the match
The ball hits the net
He loses the points
The blue team wins the match
6. Imperative sentences:
If we order, command or advice, we have to use the simple present tense.
Examples:
Shut the door
Close the window
Write neatly
