Inverted Comma and Apostrophe
Inverted Comma:
1) Inverted Comma ("") is used to speak the actual word said by the speaker in the direct speech.
Examples:
She said, "Ragu is a good boy".
Monisha asked, "What are you doing?"
The teacher said, "Tomorrow is a holiday"
2) Inverted comma is used for representing quotes from a book. If we use inverted commas, then we should use the exact words from the book.
Examples:
In Wings of Fire, Dr A.P.J.Kala quoted, "I am born in Rameshwaram".
In Harry Potter, "I win"
3) Inverted Comma is used to mention the proverbs in the sentence
Examples:
Be happy, "Boys will be boys"
Don't worry, "Slow and steady wins the race"
4) To mention the title of the book, poem, film, games, etc., we have to use the inverted commas.
Examples:
His favourite book is "The wings of Fire"
Have you ever read "All is Well" book
Apostrophe
An apostrophe is used to mention the possessiveness of something to someone. There are two types of Apostrophe we have to use in the sentence. They are,
- Apostrophe of possessiveness
- Apostrophe of contraction
Examples:
The man's hat - The hat belongs to the man
Rajesh's bag - That bag belongs to Rajesh
2) If you want to use a word in a short form without any mistake, we should use Apostrophe.
Examples:
Did not - didn't
could not - couldn't
Can not - can't
3) If you want to tell a thing that belongs to someone, but the word is in plural means, after "s" we have to use Apostrophe.
Examples:
The boys' shirts
The cats' food
