Finite and Non-Finite verb
Finite verb:
The finite verb stands in its own way. According to the number of persons or subject, the word will be changed. It gives you the complete meaning of the word.
Examples:
Reena writes a letter
Reena wrote a letter
If you see the above examples, you can see the changes in the verb form. "Reena" is a singular subject, so we add "s" to the verb and changed it to "wants". So according to the subject, the verb formats will change.
Non-Finite verb :
Non - Finite verb doesn't stand on its own. According to the number of subjects, the words will not be changed. Without any help, it doesn't give you the complete meaning of the word.
Types of Non - Finite verb:
- Gerund
- Participle
- Infinitive
Gerund:
Gerund structure is verb+ing. Both noun and verb will be induced in gerund. It acts as a noun as well as a verb.
Examples:
Reading newspaper is my hobby
Writing is an art
Walking is good for health
If you see the above examples, "Reading", "Writing" and "Walking" act as a noun and verb. Can you say me what is a noun? If it answers the question "What" then it is called a noun. So "Reading newspaper is my hobby", if we ask, What is your hobby? Then the answer will be, "Reading the newspaper is my hobby". And as well "Reading" represents the action, so it acts as a verb. If a word work as a noun as well as a verb then it is called Gerund
Participle:
Participle structure is also verb + ing. But the main point is, it acts as a verbal adjective or adverb. It describes the quality of the noun. Mostly it will next to the object. There are two types of the participle in English. They are,
- Present participle - It is a boiling water
- Past participle - Don't waste time staring at a closed window
Here the words "boiling" and "closed" both represents the verb and noun. Mostly it stands nearby the object as above "water" and "window".
Infinitive:
The infinitive structure is to + verb. It acts as a noun or object and verb.
Examples:
I love to go inside the temple
