Wind
-Subramania Bharathi
About the poet :
This poem "Wind" was written by Subramania Bharathi. If you are an Indian, you know him very well. He was such a great writer and freedom fighter. "The sword is mightier than the pen" like this proverb, through his writings he gave fear to the British. He was the one among those who fought for women empowerment also. This poem was written in the Tamil language by Subramania Bharathi
Later, this poem was translated into English by A. k. Ramanujan. He was a famous Kannada and English poet.
The theme of the poem :
If we read the poem, we may think it is about "wind". But if we analysed it, its meaning is totally different. Bharathi advised the people to be strong and confident. And ready to face the problems.
Summary :
The poet requests the wind to blow softly. And he asks the wind not to break the windows in the home. If it breaks then automatically the wind blows inside the home. So due to that, it not scatters the papers from inside the home and not throw the book from the shelf.
Frail crumbling houses, crumbling doors, crumbling rafters,
crumbling woods, crumbling bodies, crumbling lives,
crumbling hearts -
The poet asks the wind to see its damage, it tears the papers and it brings rain. It enjoys having fun on breaking the house, doors, rafters, forest and human beings. The wind throws everything, like the wind, the problems throw away the weak people from their life.
the wind god winnows and crushes them all
In the next line, the poet compared the wind to God. It cannot do what we want (like not to break anything). And also we don't have the power to control nature. So the poet asks the people to build a strong home, windows, doors, etc.,
Let's joint the doors firmly.
Practise to firm the body.
Make the heart steadfast
The poet indirectly advises the people to stay strong. Here he compares "the wind" to "the problems". Everyone has a problem in their life. It can be big or small but if we allow it in our mind surely it will destroy our mind and health. We have the precaution steps to gets out from the problem which is we have to build a strong mind. So it cannot be entered into our mind.
Do this, and the wind will be friends with us
If the people build strong homes and doors then the wind will become a friend of them. The poet concludes the poem says that only the weak people get suffered from the wind. But if the people become strong enough then it will become a friend.
