Kinds of Sentence
What is a word?
A word is a group of letters that arranged properly and it gives a proper meaning then it is called a word.
Examples:
Erhtmo can you guess the word?
No... But the arrangement of letters is not in a proper way. Now see the same word "mother" now can you read it? Yeah. When a group of letters are arranged properly only it a meaning. So only it is called a word.
Like this, we go to what is a sentence.
What is a sentence:
A sentence is a group of words that gives proper meaning to the readers. The arrangements of words are very important then only it gives a correct meaning to the readers.
There are five different types of sentences in English. They are
- Assertive or Declarative sentence
- Interagative sentence
- Imperative sentence
- Exclamatory sentence
- Fragments
Now let's see in a detailed manner
1. Assertive or declarative sentence:
A sentence containing a complete meaning or a fact is called an assertive or declarative sentence. It is again divided into two. They are Positive or affirmative statements and negative statements.
a) Positive or affirmative statement:
A sentence that gives a positive meaning then it is called a position or affirmative statement.
Examples:
- I like ice cream
- She goes to school regularly
- He bought a new car.
b) Negative statement:
A sentence that gives negative feelings then it is called a negative statement.
Examples :
- She doesn't like ice cream
- She never goes to college regularly
2. Interrogative sentence:
A sentence that begins with "why" questions or yes or no questions and ends with a question mark then it is called an interrogative sentence.
a) Interrogative pronoun :
The interrogative pronoun refers to something that we are not aware of it. To want more information we use an interrogative pronoun. It always stands for a noun.
Interrogative pronouns are what, which, who, whom and whose.
Examples:
- What is this?
- Which class are you studying for?
- Who are you?
- Whose pen is this?
- Whom did you meet yesterday?
b) Interrogative adjectives:
A word that modifies a noun by asking a question is called interrogative adjectives. Interrogative adjectives are, whose, what and which
Examples:
- Whose purse is this?
- What kind of behaviour is this, Ravi?
- Which function are you talking about?
c) Interrogative adverbs :
A word that modifies a verb by asking a question is called interrogative adverbs. Interrogative adverbs are, when, where, why, how, how far, how many and how often.
Examples:
- When will you come?
- Where is your pen?
- Why are you studying?
- How old are you?
d) Yes or no questions:
The sentence can be answered by yes or no questions then it is called yes or no questions. It always starts with helping or auxiliary verbs such as be form, do form, have form and model verbs. If the sentence begins with these words then it is called yes or no questions.
Examples:
- Did you meet him yesterday?
- Will you come with me?
- Are you coming with me?
- Can you do this for me?
3. Imperative sentence:
The sentence that gives request, command, advice, order, or instruction is called an imperative sentence. Mostly there is no subject in this type of sentence.
Examples:
- Turn right (instruction)
- Please open your mouth (request)
- Keep quiet (order)
- Avoid taking junk foods (advice)
4. Exclamatory sentence:
In the sentence which gives a sudden feeling like joy, sadness, surprise, sorrow etc.., there is an exclamation mark in the sentences. Then it is called an exclamatory sentence.
Examples:
- Wow! What a beautiful day.
- Hurrah! We won the match.
5. Fragments :
It's a new kind in the sentence pattern. Mostly we use this in our conversation. When somebody is asking question means, our answer may be in a word or two. But it conveys the complete meaning of the sentence. Then it is called fragments.
Examples:
Rahul: hello pavi, how are you?
Paavi: fine, thank you.
Rahul: did you meet the principal?
Paavi: yes. I did
Rahul: when?
Paavi: yesterday.
