Figures of Speech

FIGUERS OF SPEECH 

            Figures of Speech is a phrase or a word used for comparing or giving rich meaning to the sentence. It is used for describe something in the different ways. Out worldly it shows one meaning but when we take into the literal meaning it gives another meaning. It is in the hand of the reader to take what is correct. In early days, writing against the ruling party was banned. So in that time, writers used "Figure of speech" in their work. Out worldly it shows different meaning, but when the reader taken into the literal meaning it shows the cruel of the rural. According to the research, Figures of Speech was first used in the "Bible". So it was the old method which writers where used in their works. From that day onwards, writers are using figure of speech in their work. There are many kinds in the figure of speech. The most important among them are as follows,     

• Simile 
• Metaphor
• Personification 
• Alliteration
• Assonance
• Onomatopoeia
• Oxymoron 

SIMILE: 

            Simile is the comparison of two words by using "as" and "like". It directly comparing the two different object in the single sentence. Many writers using simile in their writing because it helps the readers to imagine clearly what the writer is trying to say and to make their writing alive. 

 

Trick words = as and like

Example: 

            The above example comparing the two things by using the word "as" and "like". Here her smile compare to the Sun and its brightness. 

Examples:  

• As black as coal 
• As old as the hill 
• As wise as an Owl. 
• As loud as a thunder. 
• She is like a lion. 

METAPHOR:

            Metaphor is the comparison of two words without using any comparison words. It indirectly comparing the two objects. Day-to-day we are using more metaphoric words in our life. 

Trick  = comparing two things without using "as" and "like" 

In one of the example, "He break my heart", here no one can come and cut her heart but it  just feeling hurt and sad. Without using like and as they are comparing love and heartbreak. 

• He broke my heart
• He is the apple of my eye
• You light up my life
• Love is fire
• Time is a thief

PERSONIFICATION : 

            Personification is giving human qualities to the non human. Writers using personification to show the power of their imagination and to understand the readers for better experience. 

Trick = Makes non-human things seems human

Tree nodded their heads gracefully. 

The tree are moving due to the wind. We all know that tree don't have human head, but to show the power of wind he uses the word ''nodded their head''. 

Examples: 

• The Sun played hide and seek with the clouds. 
• My tress are begging for water. 
• The flowers waved in the wind.
• Flowers are nodding their head cheerfully.  

ALLITERATION : 

            Alliteration is repeating the consonant sounds in the same line. It is the two usual consecutive words begin with the same consonant sound. It is not necessary to repeating the same word. But it is important to repeating the same sound. Writers and poets use the alliteration to make their writing more memorable to the readers. Its easy for the reader to memorize the repeating sounds. One of the fun features of alliteration is when it become a tongue twister.

Trick = Repetition of Consonant Sounds  

Example:

From the beginning till the end, it shows the  "sh" sound. Its repeating the consonant sounds again and again. 

• Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers. If Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers, where's the peck of pickes pepper Peter Piper picked? 
• A good cook could cook as much cookies as a good cook who could cook cookies.

• Black bug bit a big black bear. But where is the big black bear that the big black bug bit?

ASSONANCE: 

            Assonance is the repetition of the vowel sounds in the word that are closer each other. 

Trick = Repetition of vowel sounds 

Examples:

• The rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain. 
• I made my way to the lake
• The hat man
• I don't know what's going on 

ONOMATOPOEIA:

            The words whose sounds suggest its meaning. Its used to imitate the sounds of the object.

Trick = Imitates the sounds of the object  

Examples: 

Zip is the example of Onomatopoeia. When we zip up the zipper the sound of the zipper makes zip sound. 

 

  OXYMORON: 

            Oxymoron is two words which gives opposite meaning each other but express in the same line to give powerful meaning. 

Trick = Two opposite words 

Examples:

When we see the word "Pretty Ugly" its seriously opposite to each other. because the word Pretty means "looks beautiful" and the "Ugly" means its more "Unpleasent". so these two words are opposite to each other but it coints in the same sentence.
