What is a noun?
Noun represents a person, place or thing. It is the hero of the sentence. Always it should appear at first in the sentence. Aways the sentence speaks about the Noun.
Examples:
- Ramu is a good boy
- Ganga is a good girl
Here, Ramu and Ganga represent the noun in the sentence. The sentence is speaking about the noun (Ramu and Ganga).
Phrase:
A Phrase is a collection of words, that gives you a meaning of a sentence. But a phrase doesn't have a subject and predicate.
Examples:
- under process
- by the time
- by the way
Types of Phrase :
There are Five types of Phrase. They are,
- Noun Phrase
- Verb Phrase
- Adjective Phrase
- Adverb Phrase
- Prepositional Phrase
Noun Phrase
- A Noun Phrase is a group of words, that is headed by the noun. It includes the modifiers like of, a, with, with her, of them etc.,
- The modifiers can come before or after the noun
- Sometimes it is headed by Pronoun like He, She, It, They, Them and That
Types of Noun Phrase:
There are two types of Noun Phrase. They are,
- Pre modifier Noun Phrase
- Post modifier Noun Phrase
Pre Modifier Noun Phrase:
Pre Modifier Noun Phrase always comes before the noun. Again it has four kinds. They are,
- Determiners - These cars are so expensive
- Quantifiers - I have worked in lots of offices
- Number - I have two sisters
- Adjectives - I love dark chocolates
Determiners:
Determiners always give specific quality to the noun. It presents in front of the noun.
Examples:
- These cars are very smooth to drive
- That cat is in yellow colour
- Those books are very expensive
Quantifiers:
Quantifiers always give you the quantity of the noun. Quantifiers do not represent the exact numbers of the noun.
Examples:
- Many people are different from others
- Any student will write on the road
Numbers:
Numbers denote the number of the noun in the sentence.
Examples:
- I have two brother
- Three children are playing in the garden.
- Two friends are fighting each other
Adjectives:
Adjectives describe the noun.
Examples:
- She is a graceful child
- She is a beautiful girl
- I love black colour
Post Modifier Noun Phrase:
Post Modifier Noun Phrase always comes after the noun. It has five kinds. They are,
- Prepositional Phrase - a man with a balloon
- -ing phrase - the girl standing over there
- to-infinitive - I have not got any neat dress to wear
- relative clause - The man who met yesterday
- that clause (speaks about the fact, idea and suggestion) - He got the idea that people like him
Prepositional Phrase:
Prepositional Phrase modifies the noun.
Examples:
- A woman with a girl is her mother
- A girl in a white dress looks like an angel
-ing Phrase:
-ing Phrase represents -ing form after the noun.
Examples:
- The man talking to the girl
- The child standing with her mother
To infinitive:
Here we have to use "to+verb" after the noun.
Examples:
- You should take something to eat
- He has decent shoes to wear
Relative Clause:
The relative clause represents the words like that, who, whose, whom, which, etc.,.
Examples:
- The man who was eating food
- The person who we met yesterday
