Article
The article is used to refer to a noun as specific or unspecific. Basically, articles are adjectives. There are two types of articles. They are
- Definite article
- Indefinite article
Definite article:
"The" is consider a Definite Article. It refers to the noun as something specific.
Usage :
1. Before the names of river
- The Ganga, the Kaveri
2. Before the names of seas
- The Indian Ocean, the Bay of Bengal
3. Before famous books
- The Bhagavat Geetha
4. The names of the natural object which is the only one on the earth
- The sun, the moon.
5. Before the superlative Sentence
- The tallest boy, the largest wall
6. Before the names of people
The Hindu, the Christian
7. Before an adjective to represent a class of person
- The rich boy, the poor boy
8. Before a noun to particularise it
- He is the boy who beat my elder brother
Indefinite article:
"A" and "An" are considered indefinite article. It refers to the noun as something unspecific.
a) "A" is used before consonant sounds. Sometimes vowel words can also give consonant sounds. So we should be careful about it. Before consonant sounds only we have to use "A".
Examples:
- A one rupee coin
- A university
- A ball
b) "An" is used before vowel sounds. Sometimes consonant words can also give vowel sounds.
Examples:
- An hour
- An apple
- An M.L.A
