Figures of speech
What is the usage?
Figures of speech convey the meaning other than literal meaning. It always gives extra beauty to the poem. It adds extra flavour to our favourite poem. While using this in the poem, readers automatically attracted towards it. It's gives the pleasure to the readers
Where we can use it?
Most of the time, the writers used figures of speech in their poem. But now a days the writers used this in the novel, short story, drama, etc.,
Types of figures of speech:
There are several types of figures of speech. But, today we are going to the most important and common one.
Simile:
- Two things are compared each other.
Example:
The flower is as pretty as a girl
Clue words:
as, so and like
Metaphor:
- It's also the comparison of two things
- It's an informal simile
- The words like like, so and as are avoided
Example:
He is like a hero (simile)
He is a hero (metaphor)
Both sentences represent the same meaning. But the words used was different.
You are an apple of my eyes
Here, apple compared to eyes
Personification:
- Non living things, ideas, thoughts or quality are compared to human qualities or living qualities.
Example:
Angry clouds surrounded the island
Here,
Angry is a human quality
Clouds are non living things qualities
So, living things and non living things are compared each other.
Apostrophe:
- A person speak to an object, idea or things
- A person speak to a person who was not present
Example:
Oh nature! Help me.
Here,
Nature can't speak. But the narrator speak with the nature. So it is called Apostrophe
Oxymoron:
- Two contradictory ideas are using in same sentence
Example:
Marriage is bittersweet
Here,
The word "bittersweet" represents both sweetness and bitterness. Both are opposite to each other. So it is called Oxymoron
Hyperbole
- To emphasize a point, use some exaggerated words
- To make something more important than usual.
Example:
P.T.Usha runs faster than wind.
Here,
Her ability compared to the wind. To tell about her ability, we are comparing to the wind
Alliteration:
- Series of words commence with same sound
- Repetition of sounds or of a letter at the beginning of two or more words
Example:
Dirty dolphin dove across the ocean
Here,
The first letter of the word starts with "d" and upcoming also same . So it is called alliteration.
Assonance :
- Repetition of same vowel sounds at the beginning, middle or end of the line.
Example:
How soon unaccountable I became tired and sick
Reputation of "I" sound
Consonance:
Repitation of a consonant sounds in the same time is called consonance.
Example:
Mike likes his new bike.
Here, there is a repitation of "I" sound. So it is called consonance.
Onomatopoeia:
- A word used to describe a sound
- It doesn't have any meaning.
Example:
Old MacDonald had a farm eea eea ooo
Bam ! He hit the truck at the speed of 100 kmph
Here,
eea, eea, ooo, bam these are the words which represents the sound. But you didn't give any meaning
Repetition:
- Repetition of a word, for several time in the poem
Example:
Remember, no men are strange, no countries foreign
Remember they have eyes like ours
Remember, no men are strange, no countries foreign
Here,
"Remember" repeated it for three times, so it is called alliteration
