UNIT 1 (PROSE) A LETTER TO GOD
BY G.L. FUENTES
1. Why does the postmaster send the money to Lencho? Explain why does he sign the letter ‘God’?
The postmaster has sent money to Lencho in order to keep his faith in God alive. Even, he wishes to have the same faith in God. He signs the letter ‘God’ to conceal his identity as he wants Lencho to think it is actually a reply from God
2. Who does Lencho think has taken the rest of the money? What is the irony in the situation?
Lencho thinks that the post office employees have taken the rest of the money. The irony in the situation is that the employed whom he calls ‘crooks’ and suspects of taking the money are the same people who have contributed and sent him the money.
3. Describe the destruction caused by the hailstones in Lencho’s field
Lencho’s crops were ready for harvest. As he expected the rain was pouring down. But suddenly, a strong wind began to blow and very large hailstones began to fall along with rain. The hail rained on the valley for an hour, because of which Lencho’s fields were destroyed. There was not a single leaf left on the trees and the flowers were gone from the plants. The corn was completely destroyed.
4. what did Lencho do to face the sadness caused by the destruction of the crop?
The hail had practically left nothing. The cornfields were totally destroyed. Lencho and his family would have no corn that year. He could expect no help from human beings. There was a single hope; help from God. Only God could save them from such a miserable condition. So he decided to write a letter to God for help.
5. How did Lencho react when he counted the money? What did he do thereafter?
Lencho got angry when he counted the money. There were only seventy pesos in that envelope. He concluded that the post office employees had taken the remaining thirty pesos. He wrote another letter to God, asking Him not to send the remaining thirty pesos by mail as post office employees are “a bunch of crooks”.
