Past tense
Definition:
- Past tense describes the action done before the time of speaking.
Structure :
V2 (v+ed)
1. Statement :
For a normal sentence or statement, the past form of the words should be used.
Example :
- I ate an apple
- I finished my work
- I walked in the park
For a negative statement, after subject did + not or didn't and the main form of the verb should be used
Examples :
- I didn't like ice cream
- He didn't come with me
- They didn't laugh for that joke
For question format, we have to place Did before the subject and place the base form of the verb after the subject.
Examples :
- Did she go for a walk?
- Did he like cold coffee?
- Did the teacher take a class today?
- Did the children listen to the class?
- Did they take notes?
For negative interrogative sentence, we have two structure. first, place Did before the subject and not + base form of the verb after the subject. Second, the place didn't before the subject and place base form of the verb after the subject.
Examples :
- Did she not enter the class?
- Did he not sing?
- Didn't she take notes?
- Didn't they bring the notes?
1. It used to express the period of time in the past.
Example: I spent my college days in Chennai (period of time)
Example: I spent my college days in Chennai (period of time)
2. Action completed in the past but generally there is an adverbial of time that should be used
Example: Yesterday I went to the meeting
3. To indicate the special events which done in the past
Example: My uncle wished me for my success
4. To indicate the exact time when the action was done.
Example: I walked for 2 hours
5. It used to express habitual actions.
Example: My grandmother often told an interesting story to us.
6. It is used to express the improbable conditions.
Example: If I were a bird, I could fly (conditional clause)
NOTE: If you use did in the sentence then there is no change in the verb
Example: Did you like ice cream? ( did is the past tense so here like remains unchanged)
