One fine day, James Herriot stopped the car when he had seen Tricki (the dog) in the road. It was too fat and looked like a bloated sausage. It could not able to move. Its eyes were filled with water. And it was along with the rich mistress Mrs Phumphery. As a veterinarian, he stepped down from his car and moved towards Mrs Phumphery. She already knew the doctor so she said to him that Tricki was so listless and seemed to no energy. So in between breakfast and lunchtime, she gave Horlicks, cod-liver oil and malt to boost up its nutrition. So James enquired about the strict diet which he had given before. She said that it was so hard for her to follow that diet to the dog. Because when she stopped the cakes, ice creams and chocolates to the dog, Tricki was so upset and dull. She could not bear it. Due to her affection, she gave more food to the dog. Finally, he advised Mrs Phumphery to follow the strict diet and to give more exercise to the dog. Without any answer, she stepped out and moved on.
Mr Herriot knew that within few days the rich mistress could call him. Because he knew the condition of the dog. Mrs Phumphery said that Triciki was refused to eat his favourite food and always lied on the carpet and began to vomit. He already put the plan to hospitalized the dog. So he went to her home and asked her to take the dog to his clinic and admitted for two weeks. When she heard this, she was about to cry and she said the dog could not live without her. Finally, she knew the condition of the dog and asks him to take the dog to his clinic. But before they move, the maids from the home were busily moving here and there. They were bringing its day bed, night bed, breakfast bowl, lunch bowl, supper bowl, cushions, toys and rubber rings. Mr Herriot shocked to saw the arrangements. Finally, he moved with the dog. Until his car turned to the corner, the whole family and maids were seeing the car with eyes full of water. He was driving and the dog was sitting in the front seat.
The doctor and the dog finally reached the clinic. The household dogs have surrounded him. He put down the dog on the carpet. It was motionless. The other dogs have smelled it. They came to knew that it was an uninteresting object and they left. He didn't make any special arrangement for Tricki. Along with other dogs, it way stayed.
For the first two days, he didn't give any food to the dog but plenty of water. He kept an eye on him. At the end of the second day, it showed some interest in the surroundings. On the third day, when he opened the door, he was so excited to move out of the room and started to mingle with other dogs. When Tristan slopped the food in the bowl, like other dogs it also licking and again rounding the garden. From that day onwards its progress rapidly increased, The dog had no medical treatment non-other than ran and play with other dogs. Like other dogs, it was behaving like a tiger when some other took his food in the mealtime and along with its friends it went for a rat hunting.
Dozens of calls were coming from Mrs Phumphery about the condition of the dog. She inquired about whether they changed its cloth, bowls, etc., He gave only reply that the dog was " convalescing".
When she heard this word from Mr Herriot, she sent two dozens of eggs, wine and beer to his clinic to boost up Tricki's energy. But instead of he gave to the dog, he took it and enjoyed his breakfast, mealtime and dinner. So it made him tempted to keep the dog with him. But he knew that if he kept the dog for more than a fortnight she became ill. So finally he called him
Within a few minutes, the car had arrived at the clinic. So he took the dog and handover it to the lady where she was sitting in the car. When she saw the dog, she was so happy and Tricki licked her. Mr Herriot closed the car door and when the car moved forward she said "How can I ever then you? this is A Triumph of Surgery"
