One day Micheal Morpurgo was in the junk shop, in Bridport. He was there to brought a roll-top desk. He was looking at many desks and the shopkeeper was explaining it. He explained one desk which belonged to the 19th century, but it was too costly. So Micheal Morpurgo took one damaged roll-top desk. Its leg was crumbled but he thought he could restore it and the important point was it was low caste so he chose it. He reached his home with the roll-top desk and placed it in the workroom. He started to repair it. . The layer of the roll-top desk had almost damaged. It looked damaged by both water and fire. He tried to open the drawers from the roll-top desk. He opened the first two drawers but couldn't open the third drawer. He tried to pull it. At last, he opened the last drawer.
Inside the third drawer, there was a secret drawer. He opened it and inside there was a letter which was covered by sellotape. On the outer surface, one notepaper was pasted and written on "Jim's last letter, received January 25, 1915. To be buried with me when the time comes". When he read it, he came to understand that it was a personal letter, so he did not want to open it. But out of curiosity, he opened it. When he tore the sellotape, he saw one envelope. The address was "Mrs Jim Macpherson, 12 copper Beeches, Bridport, Dorset." He opened the letter, that was written in pencil and dated as "December 26, 1914"
The letter was written to Connie (Mrs Jim Macpherson) by Mr Jim Macpherson. During World War I, he was working as a Captain in British Army. So he was in a War place and sharing his experience with his wife through the letter.
